Princess of Nebraska
Wayne Wang's latest film, Princess of Nebraska, will be released on YouTube's recently launched YouTube Screening Room Channel, a free screening channel for independent films, on Friday, October 17, 2008. This is the first time a veteran icon would release a new work for free, online and is part of a new and emerging distribution strategy. Princess of Nebraska is about Sasha (Ling Li), a foreign exchange student, who finds herself pregnant. She's the new generation of China, unmoored to traditions and history. As she says, “In America I learned a new phrase, 'moving on'. Tomorrow I can start a new page.” She travels from Nebraska to San Francisco to get an abortion, but in her exploration of the city in the next 24 hours she learns that turning a new page doesn't necessarily mean turning your back on the past. Wang's companion film, A Thousand Years of Good Prayers, opens theatrically on Sept. 26 at the Clay Theater in San Francisco as part of a larger distribution plan.
