SuChin Pak is “Uniquely Me”
We just met up with SuChin Pak who is now the spokeperson for “Uniquely ME!” a partnership with Unilever and Girl Scouts of the USA to address the critical nationwide problem of low self-esteem among adolescent and pre-adolescent girls. As a former Girl Scout myself (I dropped out in 6th grade), the Girl Scouts of the USA has transformed over the years, adapting a more hands on, multicultural and take action approach to its organization. She definitely recommends this program for Asian American girls as coming from 2 different cultures (Asian and American), it is easy to get lost and feel invisible. SuChin says, “Asian parents need to understand that we want to fit in and they need to enroll us in other activities besides piano and wanting us to be the perfect Asian daughter.” SuChin Pak is hoping to encourage not only Asian American girls but all girls to sign up and join “Uniquely Me”. oh and check out her headband. I just had to ask her. Speaking of unique, it's designed by Rebecca Shim, a Korean designer. You can see more at Prinsic.com.
SuChin was born in Korea and her family moved to the Bay Area when she was five years old. SuChin never planned on a career in television. During high school while volunteering for Youth in Government, an organization aimed at involving and educating young people in the political process, SuChin was interviewed for a new segment on KGO-TV, the ABC affiliate in San Francisco. She was then approached to host “Straight Talk 'N Teens”, a news magazine format show, covering everything from entertainment to topical issues such as teen pregnancy, drug abuse and education. This “after-school job” became SuChin's introduction to the entertainment world. Juggling school and television became a mainstay in SuChin's life.
SuChin joined the MTV News Team as a correspondent in May of 2001. SuChin delivered the news for the network's flagship, live show, “Total Request Live”. Over the years, she's interviewed some of Pop Culture's biggest names, co-hosted the MTV Video Music Awards, the Movie Awards and Grammy Pre-shows. SuChin has been on the red carpet for the Oscars, Golden Globes and the Sundance Film Festival. Most recently, she's reported for MTV's Choose or Lose campaign, traveling the country to cover the presidential election, youth voting issues and political activism.
Statistics about Asian Membership:
* 5.8 percent of all Asian girls who are Girl Scout age in America are Girl Scouts
* Between 2006 and 2007 Asian membership has increased by 3.3 percent
SuChin is most proud of her work as the host and co-producer of the documentary series, “My Life Translated”. A personal, narrative doc series for MTV, the show follows the lives of young people, struggling with two different cultures, as they deal with immigrant identity in America. The series was recently highlighted on the “Oprah Winfrey Show”.
