A report released yesterday challenges the idea that Asian-American students are all succeeding in higher education. “The reality is the prevailing model minority myth is inaccurate, misleading, and damaging,” says the report, by the National Commission on Asian American and Pacific Islander Research in Education.
The report notes that despite the successes of some students in some groups, a more nuanced look at all of the ethnic groups within Asian America show that many lag in college enrollment and in joining college faculties. The report calls for a renewed focus — by the government and educators — on focusing on such gaps and including Asian American groups among those who are the focus of recruitment and retention programs.
