Want to connect with other Asian American Women? Want to make a big loud sound and look really cool? Want to explore your voice as an Asian American female?
Come share your stories while making a lot of noise! Designed to provoke thought and reflection – chit … chat … BOOM! will provide an opportunity for Asian American women eager to connect and explore their history and commonalities while experiencing the joy of Japanese Taiko drumming. Open to Asian American women of all backgrounds and varieties, ages 15-110! Use your voice, your mind, and your body and learn some very cool rhythms on ‘gomikan taiko’ (trash can drums) in a welcoming no pressure environment. No experience necessary. Bring a water bottle, an eager attitude, and wear comfortable clothing. Please note, Taiko drumming is done barefoot.
About the facilitator:
Karen Young
With nearly two decades of experience in the areas of youth development, community organizing, and Japanese taiko drumming, Karen skillfully combines personal development, team building, and taiko in this dynamic workshop. She is a founding member of Odaiko New England (a performing taiko group based in Woburn) as well as the founder of Youth on Board (a youth advocacy and training organization.) Karen is affiliated with several Asian American organizations in and around Boston and is a proud 3rd generation Chinese/Japanese-American raised in a mixed heritage family.
ASPIRE encourages folks to try new activities and explore aspirations en route to building confidence. As such, ASPIRE is also about combating the model minority myth by empowering Asian- American women to be vocal, assertive, and confident! This summer, ASPIRE is working with Karen Young, one of the founders of Odaiko New England in a fun drumming session. Taiko drumming is a traditional Japanese instrument that requires physical skill and emotional confidence, resulting in loud and strong communication. Fulfilling the goals of ASPIRE, this workshop provides a chance for Asian American females to share an experience, try something new — and have fun!
