India’s film-centric awards calendar will see a new ceremony dedicated to the music industry, with the launch of the Star Global Indian Music Awards, produced by Star Television.
The inaugural STAR GIMAs will be held in October 2010 to honor talent from a wide variety of genres, with nominees in various categories determined by a panel comprised of industry members. The GIMA advisory board includes, among others, top artists such as classical musicians Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma and Dr. L. Subramanium, leading Bollywood filmmakers Karan Johar, Rakesh Om Prakash Mehra and “Slumdog Millionaire” Oscar-winning sound engineer Resul Pookutty, in addition to executives from major labels.
STAR GIMA will also be supported by industry bodies Indian Music Industry and South India Music Companies Association along with leading labels T Series, YRF Music, SaReGaMa, Eros International, Tips, EMI, Sony Music, Venus, Universal Music Group and Aditya.
There have been earlier attempts at establishing a major music award such as MTV India’s IMMIES and the Channel V Music Awards in the 1990s, but these events were discontinued.
