Ohm Youngmisuk is the New York Giants beat writer for ESPN New York. He writes stories for ESPNNewYork.com and can be heard on ESPN radio and seen occasionally on ESPN.
He is one of the few Asian Americans in sports. He covered Jason Kidd, Patrick Ewing and the NBA for nearly a decade at the New York Daily News as the New Jersey Nets beat writer and backup New York Knicks writer before moving on to cover the NFL.
The Thai-American grew up in Silver Spring, Md. reading Michael Wilbon and David Aldridge daily in The Washington Post and wanted to be a sports writer covering the NBA since his junior year in high school. He graduated from Michigan State University in 1995 with a bachelors degree in Journalism and interned in Baltimore, Akron, Atlanta and Dallas before spending one year working in Kansas City.
He has been in New York since 1997, currently resides in Englewood, N.J. and still dreams about being an old school hip-hop/R&B/80s DJ.
Ohm answers the Asiance Woman Questions:
What is the first thing you notice in a woman?
Her eyes and smile. Kind eyes and a cute smile and I’m pretty much done.
What qualities to you look for in a girlfriend?
My friends used to say the perfect “Ohm girl” was one who had a lot of personality, a bit of feisty tom-boy, a bit girly as well and definitely into old school music like Guy and Bobby Brown. Of course, that might be like 1% of the population out there but I think I once saw her at the Thai temple in Washington D.C. in 1990. She had big hoop earrings, wore a Chicago Bulls Starter jacket but had a flower dress on under. She was like the perfect “Around the Way” girl but I chickened out and never talked to her. Sigh. These days I’m happy with a girl who isn’t shady. And the Bobby Brown thing would be a bonus. LOL.
What was the longest relationship you were ever in?
I’ve been in a few relationships of over 2-1/2 years. Then they marry the next dude. I guess I am the Thai version of “Good Luck Chuck.”
Did you ever have a nickname given to you by a girlfriend?
“Chocolate Twinkie.” Yellow on the outside, chocolate on the inside.
On his first kiss: I was a late bloomer and didn’t have my first kiss until I was 19. It came on a bench outside a dorm at Michigan State on an awesome late spring night. I was so nervous.
On a perfect date: I once took a girl to a New Edition concert, had a great dinner and a nice walk through the city. I thought it was the perfect date –- I mean, how can you go wrong with Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky and Mike, Ralph and Johnny too, you know? — until at the end of the night when I was turning around the corner of her street to drop her off and I noticed she had her hand on the door handle as if she were ready to leap out of the moving car. She did call me to go out again, though. So go figure.
Do you have a celebrity crush or someone, who is in the public eye that you would like to date? We want a feel for your type!
Well you are asking a boy who develops a crush on a celebrity like every four seconds. Growing up I had crushes on Winnie from “The Wonder Years” to Debbie Gibson and Gabriela Sabatini. I guess my most recent crushes are Jessica Alba, Amerie and Cheryl Burke.
