Sunny of JK Models

I first met Sunny at the JK Models launch party in May of 2009. A stunning statuesque young woman, I couldn’t take my eyes off her. She had ‘model’ written all over her. When I finally had the opportunity to go up and speak to Sunny, of course one of my first questions was “Are you with an agency?” To which she replied “Not yet, but I’d like to be with yours!” Sunny has impressed the many clients she has worked with not only with her outer beauty, but most importantly, her inner beauty. A comment I get from clients is “she is one of the sweetest, friendliest models I have ever had the pleasure of working with.”

Jung Sun Moon (Sunny) came to Vancouver Canada two years ago from Seoul, South Korea to study jewelry design at La Salle College. I didn’t know Sunny was a jewelry designer until she was with the agency for a few months and inquired about using a few of her fellow models for an upcoming photo shoot of her jewelry finale collection.

I recently interviewed Sunny to find out more about what brought her to Canada and how she got her start in modeling.

ASIANCE: Tell us what brought you from your native Korea to Vancouver.

Sunny: I always wanted to have a new experience in Canada because I love a challenge. I believed that the nature of Vancouver would have an influence on my jewelry.

I started modeling because of my mother. I was tall since I was little, so my mom wanted me to do modeling, but when I was doing modeling, I just fell in love with it. In 2000, I was a Korea Super Elite Model and part of Seoul Fashion Artists Association -SFAA [http://www.sfaa.co.kr/new/main/main.html](Seoul Collection). I didn’t expect to start modeling again in Canada. It’s really awesome. I love what I’m doing and I love people I’ve met since I started modeling here.

ASIANCE: Do you consider yourself a ‘green’ or ‘eco-friendly’ designer? Do you use recycled materials?

Sunny: Yes, I do, because I think that the jewelry made by recycle materials can be creative jewelry which would be a new idea-used clothes, fabrics, used bags and so on. I recycled old jeans to make some of my new pieces accessories and jewelry.

ASIANCE: Do any of your jewelry pieces have a Korean influence? What are you influenced by in your designs?

Sunny: Of course, I’m influenced by my mother country. For example, the jewelry I’m working on for my new line. I use Korean traditional materials and motive from Korean traditional textures. Korea has various original skills which I love to use for the jewelry, and I also respond to fashion normalcy with a fire and fervor for the newest idea. Though trained in fine art and jewelry history, my formal inspiration draws from the common human experience. I am also influenced by Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld and legendary artist, Pablo Picasso.

ASIANCE: How has your experience living in Canada been so far?

Sunny: It’s been good. I feel comfortable being in Vancouver like my home country. People are very kind and really sweet. Also designers, photographers, and fashion people I’ve been meeting influence me a lot with my own creativity.

ASIANCE: What are your goals for the future?

Sunny: I have a plan with my friend who is a musician (Victoria Lee) for a small jewelry show. I’m planning to start promoting ‘Moon Jewelry’ this year.

ASIANCE: Where can people buy Sunny Moon Jewellery?

Sunny: On my website www.sunnymoonjewel.com
