Whole Foods recalls gingerbread houses due to Staphylococcus aureus food poisoning fears: FDA

Call it a minor gingerbread housing crisis.

Whole Foods is recalling the pre-assembled holiday treat from 23 states, including New York, due to Staphylococcus aureus food poisoning fears, the FDA said.

While no one has reportedly been sickened by the gingerbread houses themselves, the holiday treats were produced at Illinois bakery Rolf’s Patisserie, a bakery that has been connected with several outbreaks of the food poisoning, according to the FDA.

A food item contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), can cause nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhea, reports the FDA.

The gingerbread house, which was pre-frosted and wrapped in plastic, was sold under the Whole Foods name, so if you’re not sure who made it, you may want to toss it.

Customers who purchased the gingerbread house can return it to Whole Foods Market for a full refund.
