Abortions in China on rise, especially among young women

Numerous tiny fetuses lie in unmarked graves dug by women from the abortion clinic across the street.

The staff at the small clinic in the heart of this ancient city don’t bury most of the fetuses — only those that have reached three or four months, when they clearly resemble miniature babies.

It is a secret hiding in plain sight, much like the rising rate of abortions among young, unmarried women in China.

While comprehensive data are hard to come by, official figures show abortions are increasing, and Chinese media and experts say many, if not most, of the abortion-seekers are young, single women.

Many blame the trend on newly liberal attitudes toward premarital sex, and lagging sex education. Bureaucratic red tape and social stigma also deter single women from having a child on their own, and laws bar women from marriage until they are 20, making teen pregnancy virtually unheard of. These factors and a lack of stigma surrounding abortion, or “artificial miscarriage,” as it’s known here, have helped make it a relatively cheap, widely available option for birth control.

  • That is sad. Abortion needs to be legal.

I have to mention that many friends and acquaintances ask me if I have any extra information on how to adopt Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, etc. babies because of Asiance. Americans are so enthralled by the idea of adopting adorable Asian babies. Friends of mine are on their fifth year awaiting a baby from China. That goes to show you how incredibly strong the demand here in the U.S. is for adoption overseas.

I am very partial to this subject bc if abortion were legal when I was born, there is a chance that I may not be here. On the other hand, illegal abortions are incredibly dangerous and should not be encouraged. ALL abortions are damaging both physically and psychologically. I’ve worked with women who have had them.

Also, I was born on January 22nd which is the Anniversary of Roe vs. Wade. So I feel that it is my destiny to promote the philosophy of pro-life. The Feminist/Women’s Movement has done more damage than good in my opinion. Gloria Steinem, Jane Fonda and their cronies are hardly on my List of Favorite People.

The great thing about the Pregnancy Care Center is that they counsel young girls and don’t pre-judge them. They welcome them and assist them to the best of their ability regardless of the decisions that they make.

I am personally against abortion but I don’t judge others who differ in opinion.

  • That is because China promotes a one child policy. Why don’t they promote more contraception in China so abortion is a last resort. Then you promote more white families adopting Asian babies from China and Korea. Why don’t your white family friends adopt black kids here in foster care like a Sandra Bullock. Most white families who adopted 20 30 years ago uprooted the Asian adoptees and lived in white areas in the Midwest robbing them of cultural connections. I know because I dated a Korean-American adoptee in New Orleans and she told me this about her adopted white parents. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D15TkIy2ce8&feature=related

The UNFORTUNATE truth is that the reason the black kids are in foster care in the first place is because there is not a waiting list of couples wanting to adopt them. It comes down to the simple economics of supply and demand.

I also think that any Asian child that was fortunate enough to have been given a home by a generous and loving American couple would be extremely ungrateful to complain about a lack of cultural connections. I am adopted and that is the absolute LAST thing I would EVER think of! How incredibly SELFISH!

Another thing. Did you or your former Korean girlfriend ever hear of being raised with American Mid-western values? I think that is of higher value than cultural connections!

I have to agree with Marisa. What would have been her alternative had she not been adopted by a “white couple”? It’s pretty selfish to think that way. Fortunately, she grew up in the great USA. She has the freedom to explore her cultural roots and/or her family should she so choose.

There are so many wonderful role-models of the anti-feminist, pro-life movement such as Kathy Ireland, Racquel Welch, Rich Lowry, and Eric Clapton to name but a few. Saying NO to abortion is Cool!

This article is so sad to read. I am adopted. My natural mother was very young. There are so many wonderful couples out there who would just love to help these young girls through this and are waiting in line to adopt babies. I really hope and pray that this situation changes for the better.

Abortion is a very dangerous option both physically and psychologically. For help please go to http://www.pccchoices.org for counseling.
