Last week, we picked the winner of our “Snowflower and the Secret Fan” “Meet and Greet” contest. Asiance users were asked to submit their interest through the site. The winner and her friend (to adhere to the film’s theme – women and friendship) would be able to have a sit down “Meet and Greet” with the producers of the film, Wendi Deng Murdoch and Florence Sloan. We picked Lulu Wang as our winner. Lulu is educated in film, knows the producers’ history very well, already saw the film – loved it and LOVEs Asiance.
Both Florence and Wendi took time out of their busy schedule to meet with Lulu and her friend, Yilin Hsu. The “Meet and Greet” idea was actually Wendi’s idea and they kept their word! Asiance was the only media site to have a “Meet and Greet”. We had so much fun visiting Fox headquarters, not only meeting the producers, but also the director, Wayne Wang and lead actress, Li Bingbing.
All in all, the “Meet and Greet” lasted about 20 minutes, quite generous with their schedules. They discussed films. Lulu talked about her directorial debut, which is her first film and is being filmed in Berlin. Yilin is a mixed media artist and working in New York City. Wendi discussed that she just read Patti Smith’s book, Just Kids, which talked about the ‘70s and ‘80s artists and such famous landmarks as the Chelsea Hotel. Florence said being in New York is the best place for artists. Florence suggested going to Los Angeles because that seems to be the place for young Avant-garde artists today.
Here is more information on the winner, Lulu Wang:
Lulu Wang is a filmmaker born in Beijing, raised in Miami, and currently working in Los Angeles. A 2005 graduate of Boston College, Lulu has produced numerous award-winning narrative shorts as well as documentaries. In 2005, Lulu was commissioned to direct “Fishing the Gulf” (Chiriqui, Panama) which has screened at festivals worldwide and won best documentary for Landmark Theatre’s Little Big Films Competition. In 2006, she was commissioned by EDWON (Empowered Women of Nepal) to film a documentary on Dalit women in Nepal. After making the transition to Hollywood in 2007, Lulu has worked on major big budget productions including “Rush Hour 3” and Judd Apatow?s “Superbad” and “Pineapple Express.” As a partner at Flying Box Productions, Lulu has directed numerous projects including a music video for the band Vintage Trouble and a series of teasers sponsored by State Farm for the band, OK Go and their music video, “This Too Shall Pass.”
Lulu also writes a travel/food blog entitled, “Eat at the Bar,” (EATBAR.ME), which has recently been developed into a branded web series. Lulu is currently working on her first independent narrative feature, “Posthumous,” as the writer and director. The film is set to begin production March 2012 in Berlin.
We have many more contests in the works. In the meantime, catch a screening of Snowflower and the Secret Fan.
