The fall of Tiger Woods reached new depths on Monday when the American dropped out of the world’s top 20 for the first time since 1997.

Woods, who has not tasted victory since November 2009, has been out of action with knee and Achilles tendon injuries aggravated on May 12. News of his fall from the game’s top 20 players is another indicator of his drop from grace since details of his troubled personal life emerged over a year ago.

The former world No. 1 has attempted to rediscover the form that yielded 14 major titles, first by stripping down his swing and then – more recently – by axing long-time caddie Steve Williams. A replacement has yet to be named.

Woods is expected to return to the golf course at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational next week, the stage where he shot the worst four rounds of his career last year. The American finished on 18-under, taking 78th place in a field of 80.

Despite his infidelities, we really want a Tiger comeback. He made the sport so entertaining. Is Rory McIlroy a one hit wonder?
