Bedbugs resistant to pesticide
Bedbugs have terrorized homeowners and tourists around the world, but US researchers say their genetic analyses of the beasts may lead to better ways to kill them off.
Entomologists at Ohio State University found genes that appear to be pesticide-resistant, according to their findings published on Wednesday in the online Public Library of Science. “Pinpointing such defence mechanisms and the associated genes could lead to the development of novel methods of control that are more effective,” said study co-author Omprakash Mittapalli, assistant professor of entomology.
The study was funded by the US government and carried out at the university’s Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center. “While bedbugs are poised to become one of the major household pests across the United States in the coming years, we know very little about their genetic makeup and their mechanisms of resistance to insecticides,” said Mittapalli.
No one has escaped the infestation, including luxury hotels in New York and Paris, costing billions of dollars annually in extermination efforts by businesses and homeowners.
I don’t know about you but I carry an array of disinfectants with me whenever I travel or stay as a guest anywhere. I apologize if that offends anyone but I am a germophobe and cannot help it.
If most people acted in this manner, we probably wouldn’t have the epidemic of bedbugs.
I can pinpoint a method to kill these buggers! So many people are just plain lazy and hoard so much crap. Be neat and clean. Plain and simple.
Also, make it your business to disinfect and clean on a regular basis so that the rest of us do not have to get infected and suffer with bacteria and other germs. Bedbugs are just unacceptable!! We should fine people for being slobs like they do in Singapore!
I cannot tell you how RELIEVED I am that I do not have to go near the disgusting work environments of some former co-workers. Stains galore, papers everywhere, hardly a cubby trail, you name it! Who knows what was floating around at that little workstation?? And the worst part was that they left early rather frequently and it NEVER occurred to them to just CLEAN the darn place. I would literally cringe whenever I would be told to go over there! Truly, it is not fair to people who are germ conscious, like me. Needless to say, I wouldn’t dare let them come near my stuff!
