Social Media Week ‘Checks Into’ Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s digital landscape seems primed for a robust social-media scene. It has a population of seven million. About 80% of households have a broadband Internet connection, and residents, on average, own nearly two mobile phones each. But in reality, the city’s social-media scene is lackluster, with relatively low user rates.

Social Media Week is intending to change that. Seminars and talks will bring together Hong Kong’s online community in various venues around the city this week. This is the only stop in Asia in the event’s two-year history. (The Wall Street Journal Asia is a sponsor of the event.)

The global conference — which began as a New York-only event in 2009 and has since been held in 11 cities including London, Milan and Sao Paulo — has brought in as past speakers the people behind Facebook and Foursquare as well as Roots band member ?uestlove.

Some of the featured guests at Hong Kong’s Social Media Week include Frank Rose, author of “The Art of Immersion” and a contributing editor at Wired magazine.
