The (Iron) Maiden Voyage to Singapore
With a ride that’s anything but understated, British heavy metal band Iron Maiden could hardly imagine that they would be able to slip into Singapore unnoticed. As hard to miss as band mascot Eddie, were the Iron Maiden fans who lined up outside Changi Airport to greet the legends in the flesh despite it being a bright and early Sunday.
The six-member group flew into Singapore on their specially customised Boeing 757 Ed Force One from Moscow. Eager fans checked the Moscow airport site which had posted details of flight 666, the title of one of their albums, and then tried calling Changi airport.
“[The airport staff] told us that it was at Terminal One, obviously it was a hoax,” laughed Eden Tay, self-proclaimed fan since he was 10-years-old. “We just reached… when they came out in their cars,” said the 19-year-old Temasek Polytechnic Media and Communications student.
The fan homage paid off with drummer Nicko McBrain stopping his vehicle convoy to ask fans, “Aren’t you guys supposed to be working?” That was enough to reduce some of the guys into behaving like screaming schoolgirls. Chanting out the band’s name as the last van rolled out of the airport gates, the fans were definitely pumped up about the Singapore Indoor Stadium show on Tuesday.
