Indonesian police foiled an attempt by three people to hijack a passenger

Indonesian police foiled an attempt by three people to hijack a passenger train headed for Jakarta ahead of week-long celebrations to mark the end of Ramadan.

“Three people hijacked a train from a station in West Java and forced the train engineer to follow their instructions,” transportation ministry spokesman Bambang Ervan said without elaborating. Their motive was not immediately clear.

Ervan said that police had the train redirected to a different station in the capital where officers were waiting for the trio.

“The police have arrested two hijackers. The other one ran away,” he said.

The Eid al-Fitr holidays in Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority country, fall early next week, marking the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.
