Asia’s Airports Top the List
Airports haven’t been the happiest places this year, with more than their fair share of weather delays. But on Wednesday, the Airport Council International announced its 2010 Airport Service Quality Awards. Top of the list? Incheon International Airport in Seoul, South Korea, took home first place for best airport world-wide—for the sixth year in a row.
Asia swept the rest of the overall world-wide list as well: Singapore’s Changi International Airport came in second, followed by airports in Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai Pudong. Shanghai’s Hongqiao airport received the prize for most improved. “Three of the six ‘Best Improvement Award’ winners were airports that hosted major events during the year,” said Airport Council program director Craig Bradbrook, pointing to last year’s Shanghai World Expo as a driver for local airports to improve their services. The other two were the airports in Vancouver for the Winter Olympics and Cape Town for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
The Airport Council surveyed 300,000 customers from 153 airports world-wide to compile its list. Criteria included cleanliness, check-in efficiency, comfortable waiting areas and clear signage. Top airports by region in other parts of the world included Indianapolis airport for North America, Dubai airport in the Middle East, and Malta airport in Europe. The Airport Council also listed noteworthy smaller airports catering to less than two million passengers, including Quebec City in Canada, Humberside in England, and George Airport in South Africa.
