Japan’s Arimura leads HSBC Women’s Champions
Japan’s Chie Arimura takes the lead at round one of the HSBC Women’s Champions event, after firing a four-under par 68, to take top spot at the end of Thursday. The US$1.4 million tournament is considered the biggest women’s event in Asia. Though the Japanese tops the leader board, world number one Tseng Yani is still the one drawing the crowds.
The 22-year-old, who hogged the headlines after taking the top spot in women’s golf, remains in contention for a straight fourth consecutive win, if she triumphs in Singapore where she likes playing. And her performance in round one gave her and her fans that confidence. The Taiwanese shot six birdies and four bogeys to end on two-under-par 70.
“I felt relaxed right now and the tournament, it gives me a lot of confidence here and I don’t feel any pressure. I am just competing with the best golfers in the world and I enjoy on the Tour and I’m not expecting too much. I know I’m now number one but everybody is still very close and anybody can win the tournament,” said Tseng. She goes into Friday’s round joint-third with three other players, Karrie Webb, Karen Stupples and Yoo Sun Young.
