Veteran Hong Kong actress Anita Yuen spoke about her experiences as a kept woman and dating a married man, in a recent interview with a Hong Kong tabloid, reported Hong Kong media.

Yuen said that she got involved with a wealthy businessman, who was already seeing someone, shortly after she was crowned Miss Hong Kong in 1990 at 18, a time when she had a ton of film offers to star in various productions.

“A lot of people don’t understand why I would accept the ‘care’ of a wealthy man, and become a ‘third party’, but I didn’t think there was anything wrong with the relationship at the time,” explained Yuen.

“It was simple. There was someone courting me and I accepted. The relationship was a happy one. He bought me flowers on my birthday. I didn’t feel like a kept woman and had feelings for him.”

“It just happens that he has strong finances and he made me happy,” added the 40-year-old.

“When I was a ‘third party’, the happiness eclipsed everything else. Of course, as I matured over the years, I knew I had hurt someone. Fortunately, I turned back just in time and did not do as much damage as I could have.”

Yuen had previously revealed that she had been someone’s mistress during an interview with TVB General Manager Stephen Chan in 2007, but this was the first time she went into detail about the matter.

When asked why she would spill the beans on such a scandal, Yuen explained that it was “something I really did” and felt that there was nothing wrong about admitting it.

“I sincerely feel that it was a happy relationship and a happy memory. It was just because of my identity, background that people find it problematic. Why can’t I admit to it?” said the actress.

Yuen, who married actor husband Julian Cheung in 2001, also believed that it was better to openly talk about her past than lie about it to their five-year-old son Morton Cheung, lest she loses his trust.

Her husband said that he did not mind Yuen’s past, as he too had been quite the wild child in his youth.
