The Woman Who Made Sure ‘The Music Never Stopped’

From the estate of Bing Crosby to Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones, Susan Jacobs spent two years eating lunches and dinners with artists, managers, labels and publishers, obtaining rights to 44 songs from 23 different sources to appear in “The Music Never Stopped.” Based on Oliver Sacks’ “The Last Hippie,” the film tells the story of a father’s (J.K. Simmons) mission to reunite with his estranged son Gabriel (Lou Taylor Pucci) who suffers from a brain tumor that prevents him from creating new memories.

Speakeasy caught up with the music supervisor who’s spent 18 years gaining rights for music in films such as “Basquiat,” “Little Miss Sunshine” and “Unbreakable” to talk about the importance of analog, the connection to neurologic studies and what it means to be an artist.
