A new CBS cop thriller about a detective with a freakishy accurate sense of memory has a South Asian American actress in a co-starring role.
“Unforgettable” is about Carrie Wells (Poppy Montgomery), an enigmatic former police detective with a rare condition that makes her memory so flawless that every place, every conversation, every moment of joy and every heartbreak is forever embedded in her mind.
Although this causes her anguish on a personal level, it makes her an extraordinary cop. When Carrie is called in as a consultant by the New York Police Department, she soon faces resistance from its current crack investigative team, which includes the sassy and street-smart Nina Inara (Daya Vaidya).
Vaidya was born in Kathmandu, Nepal, and moved to Oakland, Calif., with her family at the age of three. Her mother describes her as “a generic third world child,” or a multi-cultural hybrid who can seamlessly float between different ethnic and social milieus. As a young girl, Vaidya gravitated toward the performing and showed early promise in dance, with her parents’ full support and encouragement.
She studied with the Oakland Ballet Company and joined the Bay Area Youth Theater at the age of 11, where she starred in such plays as “Annie,” “The Mikado” and “West Side Story.” After graduating from high school, Vaidya was accepted to UCLA, where she majored in dance and minored in theater — but took a sabbatical to dance with the world-class Alvin Ailey Dance Theater of New York.
