Soli Spa – kick your hayfever and allergies
Though we are all welcoming Springtime with open arms as the long, cold, wet winter is finally coming to an end – things we don’t enjoy in the annual rite of spring are the hayfever and allergies associated with it. Long before Western medicine was introduced, Asian cultures have used reflexology and herbal remedies to heal all of their ailments for the last thousands of years. During Spa week, Asiance had the pleasure to meet Soli Davis, who is half Japanese and grew up in Japan and has practiced shiatsu and reflexolgy since she was 3 and has brought her healing techniques to Shibumi Spa, a zen like retreat located in the Eastern Athletic club in Tribeca. Though we were congested from Spring allergies, after one session, Soli miraculously cleared our sinuses and recharged our weary battery as she targeted specific trigger points through a reflexology massage and facial, amazing what can happen in 90 minutes!
What are some home remedies and reflexology techniques we can do to release sinus pressure during the Spring Hayfever months?
1)Allergy season.. so funny that you’re asking me this as I was going to write a blog about it next week.
Some tips and tricks: Allergies flaring , are your body’s way to let you know that your immune system is being challenged and is weakening.
2)You can use a neti pot or saline nasal rinse, at night and in the morning.. at night to get rid of all of the pollen and other allergens that you have collected during the day and in the morning to help move the mucus and clear your sinuses.
3)I have a favorite shiatsu sinus massage that I do during facials and when I put on my eye cream at home. Place your eye cream by pressing 4 equi-distant points on the eye socket ( ocular)bone starting from near your nose to the outside of your eye and then do the same under your eye on the ocular bone.
Your sinus points hurt – they are easy to find and you’re placing your cream there, repeat and press in a gentle pumping movement, three times – ending up in that tender spot in the inner corner of your eye.
Switch fingers and press/pump next to your nostrils(lymphatic system), then slide down your face and below your collarbone(about 3 inches) another sore point and then press and flick. This empties your sinuses into your lymphatic system, clearing your sinuses and getting rid of your dark circles/puffiness.
Are there specific pressure points that you like to focus on when doing your massage to release pressure in the shoulders?
Stress also causes your immune system to break down, I have two blogs on my website: www.shibumispany.com that pertain to how to release your jaw muscle. This TMJ spot as it is affectionately called is also the site of all 5 meridian lines and effect your sinuses as well. My December and January blogs were a reminder to let people know that while we may not always be able to control the stressful situations in our lives, we can take care of our health but finding and integrating simple exercises into our everyday schedules.
What are our most important median lines in our body and how should we take care of them?
All of your meridian lines are important it is the imbalance of your system that is reflected in symptoms like allergies, small colds ..etc.

A tried and true remedy that I like to use is eucalyptus. I take a dixie cup with a cotton ball and soak it in eucalyptus oil. Then I go into the steam room with it and breath in and out for at least 15 minutes. Inhale the vapors from the dixie cup. Breathe deeply, and breathe in through your nose as much as possible. Every two minutes, blow your nose to remove the loosened mucus and make inhalation easier.
