Interview with Photographer Shirley Yu

Photographer Shirley Yu was born in Beijing and currently lives in New Jersey. She has worked with major NYC agencies (Ford, NEXT, Elite, Trump, Request, DNA, Red, Major, and Wilhelmina) as a fashion photographer. She is one of the youngest fashion photographer in New York City.

ASIANCE: You are very young but have suceeded in breaking into a business that is very competitive. How did you do it?

Shirley: By making my own goals, getting noticed and working constantly to make sure the right people would see my work.

ASIANCE: You seem to have many male models in your portfolio. Is that by choice?

Shirley: Yes. For the most part, I enjoy shooting male models more than women. It is more low-key when it comes to hair and makeup. Male models bring a different type of personality on set, and I feel like I enjoy the aesthetic of menswear more than womenswear.

ASIANCE: What has been the most exciting experience you have had so far?

Shirley: In terms of photography, I think the most exciting experience was shooting the supermodel Francisco Lachowski on Coney Island beach!

ASIANCE: I understand you will be going to school soon. What will you study?

Shirley: I graduate JP Stevens High School in 2012. I plan on studying for a business degree with a concentration in Economics or Finance. If it is offered, maybe a minor in Art History.

ASIANCE: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Shirley: I see myself happy, with friends, and hopefully in love! My photography will also have evolved. Maybe in five years I’ll live in Paris for a brief period of time!
