The Jakarta Police will begin an investigation into the Indonesian ghost film “Mr. Bean’s Possessed by D.P.” next week after a moviegoer filed a complaint saying that the film, which stars a Mr. Bean look-a-like, is deceptive.

Muhammad Zainal, 29, filed a report with police claiming that the film’s producer KK Dheeraj and star Dewi Persik knowingly deceived Mr. Bean fans by implying that Rowan Atkinson, not a Mr. Bean impersonator, was starring in the film.

“Zainal said he watched the movie, thinking it featured [Dewi] and actor Rowan Atkinson. But there was no Rowan at all. Instead there was only someone who looks like Rowan,” Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said in Jakarta on Thursday. “He felt cheated both morally and materially as he spent Rp 35,000 ($4) [on a ticket].”

The man claimed that Dheeraj violated Indonesia’s consumer protection laws that prohibit false advertising and concealing a hidden defect.

If convicted, the film’s producer could face a maximum penalty of five years in prison and up to Rp 2 billion in fines.

The original Mr Bean, a television and film series that brought Atkinson international fame, is popular in Indonesia, where the character is found on mobile phone covers and pencil cases.

The film’s producer said the film did not deceive audiences.

“I never wrote Rowan Atkinson’s name on the poster,” he said. “I did not deceive the public.”

Dheeraj admitted to the public on Tuesday that the actor who played the Mr. Bean look-a-like was a fellow Englishman named Bill Ferguson.
