July 15 was the deadline for submitting applications for the primary in September. According to the signatures collected by the New York City Campaign Finance Board, the Flushing area has been getting many applications. Besides State Assemblywoman Grace Meng (District 22) who faces no challengers, other positions in the Democratic Party have more the one contender, many who are Chinese and Korean Americans.

In District 16, there are three people running for a seat in the state senate, including the incumbent Toby Stavisky, Isaac Sasson, who garnered 5,900 signatures, and attorney John A. Messer, who is married to an Asian woman.

The race elsewhere is also competitive. Philip Hom, an attorney for the City Council, and James Trikas are running for the State Assembly in District 22-Area A. Two Korean Americans, S.J. Jung and Terrence Y. Park, are running for District 22-Area B. Eun Chul Kim and Martha Flores Vazquez are running for State Senate for District 22-Area A. Julia Harrison and Mable Law, who is the chair of Flushing Business Improvement District, are running for the State Assembly for District 22 Area-B. Ron T. Kim and James Wu will also run for the State Assembly in District 22.

In other districts, the competition is not as intense. Many incumbents will continue to run for re-election. Republican candidate Michael W. Chan will run against Richard Gottfried, who has held the seat for 40 years, for the State Assembly for District 75.
