Marisa Sung’s Rules Of Etiquette For The Modern World Number 27

When you are planning a wedding it is in very poor taste to tell the prospective guests how much it costs per plate. In addition to that it is even worse to convey concern over the general cost of the affair. If you have money issues, you can always elope or have a very elegant small reception with cocktails, hors d’ oeuvres and a simple dinner. Cut out all of the waste like the buffet for a king’s palace and the Viennese hour.

Also if you are financially strapped, please do not plan a “destination wedding” when you cannot pay for the block of hotel rooms for your guests. It is too much to ask that friends and family pay for their entire trip plus your wedding gift. Under these circumstances, eloping would be advisable. You cannot look at a monumental event such as a wedding as a business opportunity. Regardless of how extravagant the affair, people will give what they feel comfortable with. Finally, when you are approaching 40+, keep it small and simple or elope. I had a big wedding planned when I was 25 and it never happened because I ended the engagement. Eight Bridesmaids and all! Now, I am only having a very small and simple but elegant affair.
