Racial issuess are still a sensitive matter in the multiethnic United States, and the composition of the country’s population will change significantly in the coming decades. By how much will the United States’ white, non-Hispanic population increase by 2050?

A. 129 million
B. 83 million

By how much will the United States’ white, non-Hispanic population increase by 2050?

A. 129 million is not correct.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the U.S. population will increase from 310 million people in 2010 to 439 million in 2050, an increase of 129 million, or 42 percent. This increase is equal to the U.S. population in 1937. Aside from the United States, only eight countries have a current population that is larger than the projected 129 million increase in the U.S. population.

B. 83 million is not correct.

In 2010, Hispanics will account for 50 million of the 310 million Americans, or 16 percent. By 2050, their number will increase by 83 million, or 167 percent, to a total of 133 million. At that time, nearly one in every three Americans will be Hispanic. In 1880, the total U.S. population was as large as the number of Hispanics is today.

C. 17 million is not correct.

The number of black Americans will increase by 43 percent in 2050, from 40 million in 2010 to 57 million. This increase of 17 million is equal to the country’s total population in 1840. Likewise, the number of Asian Americans, at 14 million in 2010, will increase by 20 million, to a total of 34 million by 2050. However, while the percentage of blacks will remain stable at less than 13 percent, the share of Asian Americans will increase by two-thirds, from 4.7 percent in 2010 to 7.8 percent by 2050.

D. 2 million is correct.

By 2050, the number of non-Hispanic white Americans will increase by 2 million, to 203 million from 201 million in 2010, an increase of less than 1 percent. While non-Hispanic white Americans now account for about 65 percent of the U.S. population, their share over the next four decades will decline to 46 percent. By 2042, whites no longer will constitute a majority of Americans.
