Yohji Shows a ‘Very Sexy Collection’.
The invitation for Yohji Yamamoto’s fashion show contained a fake eyelash glued on an austere red background. The avant garde Mr. Yamamoto is known for dressing a fashion-forward woman, and last night he didn’t disappoint her.
Lashes were big. Models wore elaborate fake ones, on their top and bottom lids, making them appear doll-like and innocent, even as they walked in sheer mesh clothes with a tough punk-rock inspiration. Also, their heads were topped with whipped-up pastel wigs that looked like cotton candy.
The clothes were a study in layers, pleating and textures. The mesh dresses, some with wild hoop crinoline skirts would be just the thing for a fashion risk taker like Helena Bonham Carter to wear to a premiere. Other dresses, like a red mesh style with a long skirt were perfectly wearable for a cool woman with a lot of gallery openings to attend. (I’d advise pairing it with a good, supportive bra, something that the models were instructed not to do, likely for artistic purposes.)
