Lucy Liu stepped into Southland this fourth season, but in many ways it feels like she has always been a part of the team. Officer John Cooper (Michael Cudlitz) transitioning from being a training officer to working with a partner who is, in every way, his equal has been smoother than one might expect, especially considering she comes to him a bit damaged from a recent attack on the job.

Liu shared with LA TV Insider Examiner that things are actually about to take a turn. Cooper wants to crack her surface and get her to open up, but very soon things about her come to light that create tension between the two instead.

“I think there’s a lot of layers to the character that they’re creating, and I think that what’s special about her is…she’s not open, and so when she does reveal anything, it’s sort of a slow reveal, and it’s in bits and pieces, and you kind of have to puzzle them together,” Liu said
