What People Search For on Mobile Websites, Smart Phones & Tablets
It’s interesting how people use or don’t use the Internet. I saw this chart and realized that more people are completely ditching their desktop devices. What does that mean for online businesses? Let’s take a look.
Product, Location Searches Rule – Notice, 80% of the people use their smart phones and tablets to search for something to buy or basic store information. This is important because most websites are not built to support simple tablet and small scale smart phone displays. Tabbing and pulling the screen around takes too much time. If your site is built for these small devices you will keep people on your site longer and more likely to come to your store. It’s important to know that just being able to view your site on a phone doesn’t make it searchable.
Mobile Planning – The most important things people look for with their tablets are often your address or hours. Notice this site and it’s mobile counterpart. Just the facts, would describe the strategy for a mobile site: key products, sales, directions, hours, phone number. That’s it. Get rid of everything else.
Researching Products – I know who these people are. They are the ones at the Little League game who are supposed to be watching their kids, but during pitching changes and such are researching on their tablets. They do this during meetings (and you thought they were taking notes) and during conferences. Seriously, people use their phones to check out products. Your products need to have their reviews and pricing readily available on your mobile site. Don’t assume prospects only research when they can be at their desk. Like land lines, smart phones are replacing PCs for many highly mobile people.
Just like you list a phone number, email address, website, physical address and hours on your literature, you can no longer have only a single website. A mobile website is just another extension of how clients can find you and you need to present yourself in a context they prefer.
