Hong Kong singer-actor Andy Lau Monday dismissed rumours he may run for
Hong Kong singer-actor Andy Lau Monday dismissed rumours he may run for the seat of Chief Executive of Hong Kong, despite calls from netizens and his fellow celebrities for him to throw his hat into the ring, reported Hong Kong media.
Netizens have recently expressed via online polls they wanted Lau, who had once played the Chief Executive in his film “Golden Chicken 2”, to enter the race to become the successor of Hong Kong’s current Chief Executive Donald Tsang, who will step down in June.
Celebrities like actor Ng Ka Lok and Macau tycoon Stanley Ho’s daughter Florinda Ho have also urged Lau to do so, triggering speculation Lau may indeed be considering a shift into politics.
But Lau cleared the air on Monday and told reporters during a promotional event in Beijing that he prefers to remain an actor.
“To me, I think I’d better just stick to acting,” said Lau.
While some felt it was a waste Lau refused to enter the race, others felt relieved as they believe Lau may not be the best man for the job.
His detractors feel that Lau would not have been a forthright politician, pointing out that he secretly married his Malaysian wife Carol Choo in 2008, and kept his fans and the media in the dark until his marriage certificate was uncovered a year later.
Would you vote for Andy?
