Austin secures funds to expand planned Asian center

The city of Austin has been awarded $750,000 in federal funds for the construction of the Asian American Resource Center.

The center’s mission is to increase commerce and showcase the best of Asian culture. The award is from the Department of Commerce, through the Economic Development Administration.

In 2006, the Austin City Council included $5 million from the city’s bond program for the construction of the Asian American Resource Center, which was approved by voters.

Assistant City Manager Rudy Garza said the grant will allow the city to expand the size of the facility by 2,000 square feet, resulting in additional classrooms, and allows some of the city funds to be used for technology, furniture and fixtures.
