Motoko's Q&A

Motoko answers your fabulous makeup questions!

An easy and fresh look.

Hello Motoko!
I admire your work. It's so unique. As for my question: I've got a fair complexion with minor imperfections. How can I achieve Zang Ziyi's or Shu qi's fresh and radiant look? It seems that makeup artists put almost nothing on her face! It's incredible. The kind of makeup I'd like to achieve : http://www.shuqi.org/multi/pictures/awards/sq_goldenhorse/sq_golden2005-B4.jpg http://www.shuqi.org/multi/pictures/hot_new/SQ050704/sq050704-05.jpg http://www.helloziyi.us/Galleries/new/oscars-2006-zhang-ziyi-14.htm Thank you! P.S : Makeup tutorials via video would be great :-)

Hi Be,
My goal when I do make-up on people is to make their skin look perfect, flawless & natural. So, your comment is really appreciated.

I did the make-up for Ziyi Zhang in the photo you chose, so I can definitely say that she had foundation on her face. Shu Qi also had some foundation on her face, I believe. If you choose a foundation that says "sheer", "tint", "moisturizing", etc., it gives your skin a light, healthy, and dewy look. Then cover your imperfections by a concealer. When you apply a foundation use your finger, brush (flat and shape of 1/2 oval or rectangular on the tip), sponge, or combination of all of them. Spread foundation from the wide area of your face (around your cheek, forehead) to your chin, nose, and around your mouth and eyes. For each application, use a small amount of foundation. The minimum application of make-up shows natural beauty and achieves your ideal skin.

p.s. If you like a dewy look, do not use any powder, or try just a few strokes of brushing with a small amount of translucent powder.

Scars on my face

Hi motoko,
I love new fashions, but my problem is I have a scar on my forehead. It’s just a small one but it's really visible. I just want to ask if/what hair style can be fitted for me to cover up the scar? Or what make up or foundation can I use for my scar to be less visible?

Hope you can help me with this. thank you...

Hello Emily,
I think it is hard for you not to care about your scar because you are a girl, but, if you accept your scar and think about it positively your scar will be part of your charm instead of a problem. I also have an inch long scar on my forehead, but never cover it by anything, neither hair nor concealer. One of my clients who is an actress has a half inch scar above her jaw line; however, she never tries to hide it. I cover it with foundation like the other areas but do not use any concealer and she is still very beautiful. She says it is part of her character.

If you still want to cover it, I recommend that you have your hair banged. You might be able to cover it by concealer, but it sometimes makes it more visible rather than less.
Best!

Leave your questions for Motoko and she will be glad to answer each and every one.

Natural Look

Hey Motoko! I would like to learn how to make my face look very natural and fresh, with the whole pouty baby pink or pale pink lips looks that are hitting the runways recently. The look is just so pretty and delicate. If you were able to teach me and tell me brands of lipstick/gloss that is able to achieve the baby pink lips or pale pink lips look, that's be amazing :D Here is a picture of what I'm referring to: http://www.elle.com/assets/image/2006/Q4/101220060927556395.jpg http://img.verycd.com/posts/0611/post-336431-1164288802.jpg Oh and my lip type is very natural but red most of the times, I hope you can teach me how to achieve that lips look! Thanks!
