NYFF pays homage to Japanese director

The New York Film Festival is honoring the films of Japanese Director Masahiro Shinoda in a retrospective slated to last the entire festival.

The 79-year old director is best known for exploring how the modern Japanese cinematic aesthetic interacts with traditional art forms such as bunraku puppet theatre and sumi ink painting. He also teamed up extensively with other leading Japanese artists such as Shuji Terayama. But perhaps his most celebrated collaboration was with composer Toru Takemitsu whom he frequently worked with.

Shinoda belongs to a group of “new-wave” directors to come out of Japan in the 1960s, who challenged the established Japanese cinema with new characters, stories and styles.
